Have you tried the Thai restaurant called 'Cabbages and Condoms'. Yes, the name is dodgy but the food divine and not too harsh on the pocket especially at lunch. C&C is on a little street east of Kawaramachi just up from Shijyo. Just turn east/right at San Maruko coffee shop.

Thank you for your comments. I'm sorry you had some trouble there, but it sounds to me like a simple misunderstanding, due mainly to the language barrier. And obviously we can't blame the restaraunt for that. I would be very surprised if they had deliberately overcharged you. When in a foreign country it pays to keep tabs on how much you are spending as you order it and not to take anything for granted. I can't imagine any restaurant in Japan serving you "free food " before your meal or "free rice" with it. (Whereas if you were in Korea, they would serve you so many free dishes your appetite would be gone before you got to what you ordered). I certainly don't remember being served any mystery dishes that hadn't been ordered when I went to Bangkok Garden. And I'd also disagree that the portions were small. Having said that I am remembering it through a haze of Singha beer... Admittedly it's not a cheap place but if you are looking for something a little bit special, I think it's worth it. Anyway, thanks again for pointing out that this particular restaurant is a bit pricey as I clearly didn't make that plain in my article.

(as an addition to that quote, they didnt put the prices of the things on the bill, and in our limited japanese we didnt want to go through the difficulty of figuring out why it came out to sooo much)

i went here with several friends last night, although it was delicious, the portions are somewhat small and the bill turned out *much* more than was expected. perhaps they charge for the seemingly 'free' food that they bring out before the meal? or they bring you rice with your meal but charge you for it?
