I am a freelance writer, editor and translator based in Kyoto. Originally from Middlesbrough in the North East of England, I moved to Japan in 1997. Since then I have lived, worked and studied in Fukushima, Saitama, Tokyo and Kyoto. I moved to Kyoto in 2004 and began the Deep Kyoto blog in 2007. In 2014 I co-edited and produced with Ted Taylor the Deep Kyoto: Walks anthology. This was released initially as an e-book, but a print copy of the anthology will be released in 2017.
My articles have appeared in various online and print publications. In Japan these include Japan Today, Kansai Scene, Kyoto Journal and Kyoto Visitor’s Guide. Internationally, I have written for CNN Travel, GuideAdvisor, The Simple Things, and Morning Calm (the in-flight magazine for Korean Air).
Currently I am working as the Editor of the ZenVita architectural blog and as a content writer for the Japan Station project by Netmobius. I have also contributed to Chris Rowthorn’s Inside Kyoto website.
