Christmas in Kyoto

December 12, 2011 By Michael Lambe Leave a Comment

I’m heading home to jolly old England for the holidays, but if you are staying in Kyoto and feeling the need for some seasonal cheer, here are two events that sound just lovely! First up, Caroline Téjédor tells me that there will be a Christmas Market at the French Institute on Higashioji Street this weekend (17-18 December). Caroline says,

There will be a lot of stands in the garden of the Institute selling Christmas food, Christmas presents… There will also be a band, a cine club with movies for kids…

More details are posted in French and Japanese on the French Institute’s website. The Institute itself is a short walk south of Hyakumanben on the west side of Higashioji. The closest station is Demachiyanagi and the closest bus stops are Kyodai Seimon Mae or the Hyakumanben stop. Here is a map.

The following weekend, why not join in a seasonal chanson outside City Hall? The Singing Around the Table group and dance enthusiasts Contra Kyoto are joining forces on Christmas Eve to belt out some tinselly tunes – and all are welcome to join. Felicity says,

Let’s go carol singing on 24th December 2011. Meet outside Kyoto City Hall (NW corner of Oike Kawaramachi) at 7pm. English/Japanese song sheets provided. It’s cold, so wrap up warm (hat, gloves, muffler, antlers etc) !!! Last year we retired to nearby Irish Pub Gnome afterwards for food and drinks.

Many thanks to Felicity and Caroline for sharing these events with us!
