Here are some up-and-coming events that have caught my eye lately:
6/20 (sat) 6~9 pm Feeling lonely? Get out! Mingle! And feel the internationalization! Why Not Japan are hosting an International Sushi Party at the Gael in Gion. All-you-can-drink plus sushi for ￥3,000 or ￥2,500 if you are a member. Further details, directions and pictures here.
6/21 (sun) 7:30~10 pm Sing Around The Table in Gnome Irish Pub. Hosted by Felicity Greenland & Tomoko Saito, this is a very enjoyable and COMPLETELY FREE (!) folk song workshop & performance. Current ~ 7/20 (mon) Avante Garde City: Modernism in Kyoto 1895 ~ 1930 @ MOMAK (The National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto) …in tandem with the Kyoto Shimbun in celebration of their 130th anniversary …the organizers hope to present a vivid picture of Kyoto in full swing as a vanguard city of Modernism in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Access information here. Normally closed on Mondays but open on the 20th because of the National Holiday. Open 9:30 am~5 pm (final admission 4:30 pm). Also until 8 pm on Fridays (final admission 7:30 pm). Entry fee: ￥1,200.
6/30 (tues) ~ 9/27 (sun) The Louvre Museum Exhibition: Master Paintings of 17th Century Europe @ Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art. 71 treasures from the Louvre including Vermeer’s “The Lacemaker,” Rembrandt’s “Self-portrait,” Poussin’s “The Finding of Moses,” and La Tour’s “Joseph the Carpenter”, will be exhibited. Preview here. Access information here. Entry fee: ￥1,500. Open:9:00 am~5 pm (admission until 4:30 pm). Closed on Mondays (except on national holidays).
