Up & Coming Music, Movie and Poetry Events

April 6, 2010 By Leave a Comment

Some music, and movie news from our regular contacts plus a reminder.

First up – folk music. Felicity Greenland writes:

Hi Y’all – Happy Hanami!

I hope you are enjoying that spring feeling. Here are two sprigs of musical news…

Firstly: Singing Around the Table – our next meeting will be Thursday 29th April 7.30-10.30pm (a national holiday) at the usual place: Gnome Irish Pub (south of Nijo on the west side of Kawaramachi – directions here). FREE Well known songs of the English speaking world. Song sheets provided.

Secondly: to invite you to hear three great musician friends of mine from England who are visiting Kyoto this week. They will play two concerts in town (both free).

Their band is called “Rattle on the Stovepipe“, and the members are:
Dave Arthur
(5 string banjo, melodeon/concertina)
Pete Cooper
(fiddle)
& Dan Stewart (5 string banjo, guitar)
All the guys sing, and they play excellent Appalachian, Oldtime, Bluegrass, Irish and English music.
If you have time please come and see them at:
Gnome Irish Pub
(south of Nijo on the west side of Kawaramachi – directions here) Weds April 7th 8-11pm
Field Irish Pub
(going east from Karasuma on the north side of Nishiki – directions here) Thurs April 8th 8-10.30pm
Both events are free, and both pubs serve good food.
Next they move on to Molly Malone’s in Hiroshima on April 9th.

Next – a movie! Jen L. Teeter wrote to tell me that Blue Gold, a movie about the world water crisis, will be showing at Kyoto’s  Minamikaikan on these dates: April 5th – 9th at 11am; April 10th – 14th at 12:35pm.

Award winning, Blue Gold: World Water Wars takes us straight to the source of the water crisis by exploring how U.S., Canadian, British, French, and Japanese multinational corporations–by trying to privatize water as a commodity–are polluting and diverting water resources at the expense of local communities, resuling in large-scale desertification and wars fought over the most precious resource on our planet.

Prices and access map here. You can read more about the movie at the blog 10,000 Things.

Lastly, a quick reminder of the next JIPS poetry event:

On Sunday April 11th, Bill Berkson, visiting poet, art critic and curator from the USA, will read from a selection of 50 years of his poetry entitled Portrait and Dream. He will also talk and answer questions about his work as a poet including how it connects with his years as a professor and writer on visual art. You can read some of his poetry at these sites Milk magazine, Jacket magazine, Bigbridge.org, and Shampoopoetry.com. You can listen to his poems here. Time: 6:00 to 9:00 PM
Location:
Heartpia Kyoto AV room
Admission price:
1000 yen
Directions:
Heartpia Kyoto is at Marutamachi Station on Subway Karasuma Line. From Kyoto station the train will take approximately 7 minutes (4 stops). Just go out from Exit #5 of Marutamachi station, and you will be standing just below the building of Heartpia Kyoto. Here is a map.
