UPDATE: It’s a terrible pity but 309 The Canteen has now closed it’s doors for good.
Many thanks to Karl Mead for putting me on to this one. 309 THE CANTEEN is an informal restaurant serving and indeed celebrating British cuisine. A sign on the counter reads “You know nothing about Great British Food!” Aah! After years of listening to snarky remarks about British food it is a real delight to find like-minded souls who appreciate our Great British pies and puds! This from the website:
Chef Eiki Mano lived in Derbyshire and London for 5 years and enjoyed British food so much… “309 THE CANTEEN” is an informal restaurant, with a London cafe atmosphere, serving classic British dishes such as steak and kidney pudding, Lancashire Hot Pot and (all-day) famous English breakfast with home-made sausage and black pudding, accompanied by all time favorite desserts such as sherry trifle, sticky toffee pudding and Cambridge burnt cream. In search of British cuisine, Eiki and his team are also rediscovering the origins of British cuisine and working to recreate the dishes.
Here are some pictures. Go to flickr for a closer look.
Also on the menu: Lardy Cake! Marmite on bread! Sausage and Mash! Old Peculier! Strongbow Cider!
This place is a GEM!
309 THE CANTEEN is located on the south side of the arcade on Sanjo west of Horikawa street. Here is a most convenient map.
