I popped into Long Island Cafe at the weekend, just to say hello and see how the new place looked. The new cafe certainly feels roomier, and more comfortable. Instructors and students sit together on floor seats round low tables in a friendly, more intimate atmosphere; a very good space for encouraging students to speak. Reiko (see above right picture) assures me that the deal for instructors remains unchanged so here are the details again, cut & pasted from the old cafe’s article:
Customers can chat freely here in a relaxed atmosphere, without any of the pressure of a normal school. If you are a native speaker and are interested in becoming an instructor here, the pay rates are as follows:
For free conversation “Cafe Time”: ¥1,000 per hour.
For lessons: ¥1,500 per hour.
This goes up after 3 months to:
Cafe Time: ¥1,200
Lessons: ¥2,000
The pay isn’t great I know, but it is cash in hand, the job is super-easy and you can have a couple of free drinks into the bargain. I used to work here on weekends when I was a student, just to make a bit of extra pocket money.
Full details of the deals for students are up on their website here and there is also a scehdule here.
Incidentally, they are having a Halloween party on the 25th. It’s ¥3,500 for all the snacks and booze you can consume or TOTALLY FREE if you are an instructor. I recommend signing up as an instructor fast, as those parties are a blast. Long Island Cafe is located on the corner of Gokomachi and Aneyakoji (near Teramachi / Sanjo) a far more convenient location than before and just a stone’s throw away from our old friend Prototype. Here is a most convenient map.
