This place is great. It’s just across the road from Kyoto University on Mikage Dori, so I guess the fact it caters for a lot of penniless students may explain the great value. For ¥900 yen you get a main course AND rice AND miso soup AND salad. In other words: “Lots of STUFF!”. And it all tastes wonderful too. One draw back: it’s mostly meat so not good for true vegetarians, but for fish eaters like me the turbot or the shrimp dish are fantastic. Here are some pictures:
A close up of the ムニエル (Turbot in a very nice mustard sauce).
And here’s the chicken baked in mayonnaise:
And here’s the shrimp and veggies:

For an extra ¥300 you can get a tea or coffee too.

To find ひらがな館 go north on Higashioji Dori until you reach Satonomae, turn east onto Mikage Dori and after another 150 metres it’s on the north side of the street. Here is a map (the arrow marks the spot).

    Opening hours:

    Closed on Tuesdays
