Back when I lived in central Kyoto I was frequent visitor to the bakery Bread Room and happily recommended that fine little shop on Deep Kyoto in 2009. A few years ago though I moved down to Fushimi, invested in a bread making machine, and naturally lost touch with that fabled purveyor of fine baked goods. As it turns out, in the intervening years the owners of that shop have … [Read more...]
Bread Room
Guess what they sell in here. In my ongoing quest to find the best bakery in Kyoto, I ventured over to Bread Room today. I think it may have overtaken Walder in my estimation as the leading contender. I spent almost 2,000 yen on a variety of baked goods and I wasn't disappointed by the flavor. … [Read more...]
Walder
Walder is a German style bakery on Fuyacho Street, just south of Rokkaku Street. They have an impressive range of tasty looking loaves, pastries and treats... … [Read more...]
Fleur de Farine
Today I bought my lunch at the bakery Fleur de Farine. This tiny little store sells french style loaves in a variety of shapes and sizes. Apparently, they also sell a British style loaf but it is always sold out when I go there. … [Read more...]
Citron Salé
Last week Mewby discovered this wonderful Japanese blog: せっかく京都に住んでるし. It's worth a look. There are hundreds of Kyoto cafes, bakeries and sweet shops listed there and plenty of pictures, so even if your Japanese isn't up to scratch, you can still make some nice new discoveries. Our nice new discovery was Citron Salé. … [Read more...]
Bagel & Bagel
Ted put me on to this wonderful article by Willard Spiegelman on his experiences upon visiting Japan: Gained in Translation. I was reading it this evening after work, when I came upon this short passage: ...bagels, sometimes spelled “bagles,” are a staple, but I stopped short of trying the soymilk and edamame combo, or the green tea and white chocolate one, that I found at … [Read more...]
Takarada Bakery
This little bakery on Higashioji Dori... ...does a very nice soft white loaf... ...among other things. This in fact is my trusted source for all my toast and sandwich needs. In their cafe section they also do a lunchime set of pasta, salad and coffee which I've never tried but it seems very reasonable at ¥525. Takarada Bakery is on the west side of … [Read more...]
Le Petit Mec
Le Petit Mec is a French style cafe & bakery on Imadegawa just west of Horikawa, which appears to be open only on weekends... They sell a fantastic variety of delicious breads, sweet pastries and sandwiches which you can eat in or take out. Here below are my purchases, left to right: くるみパン - Walnut bread - ¥168 a roll, ジャガイモパン - Potato bread - ¥157 a roll, and … [Read more...]
boogaloo cafe & deli
Here's a pleasant respite from the madding crowds of Teramachi. Escape to the soft lighting and background jazz of the 2nd or 3rd floor cafes and order yourself a healthy lunch. This is also a bakery so pasta, pizza or a nutritious salad can be ordered for lunch with a パン食べ放題 or all-you-can-eat-bread deal. Here are some items off the lunchtime menu: ●pasta lunch (today's … [Read more...]
Sugary
Sugary was perhaps so named to attract those young Japanese ladies in their early 20s who are so notoriously fond of the sweet stuff. I say that because when I visited this cafe and cake shop last week, I was not only the oldest person there but also the only male. Not that I minded though. It's a nice place for coffee and a chat but naturally the desserts are the main thing (I … [Read more...]
Les Freres Moutaux (Aburakoji Branch)
This post is not about the main branch of Les Freres Moutaux (which is up in Iwakura) but about the branch on Aburakoji Dori. To be honest, I came here looking for bread, and so was a little dissapointed by the limited range of average-looking bread on offer. This shop seems to be more cakes and pastries orientated. However, in all fairness, they may have more bread on offer … [Read more...]
はちはち Infinity Cafe
A few years back, when I lived in Tokyo I possessed a wonderful little book called “Little Adventures in Tokyo”; a guide to 39 fun yet unusual excursions in the throbbing metropolis. Now if someone were to write a book entitled “Little Adventures in Kyoto”, they would definitely include the wacky little café/bakery and live music venue Hachihachi Infinity Cafe. Set apart … [Read more...]
Cafe Bibliotic Hello!
Situated on Nijo/Yanagiyabamba, "Cafe Bibliotic Hello" is a converted old machiya, one of the traditional old wooden townhouses of Kyoto. Bring a book with you or just grab one of the many off the walls. Here you can enjoy coffees, teas, cakes, pastries or grab some dinner if you are really hungry. I recommend the "Old Fashioned" a kind of fruit crumble with ice-cream. The … [Read more...]
