I’m in here too!

November 17, 2011 By Michael Lambe Leave a Comment

I happened to be mooching around the bookshop on the 6th floor of Yodobashi Camera this evening. They have a small corner devoted to English books, so I thought I’d have a browse. Out of idle curiosity I picked up a copy of The Rough Guide to Japan and had a look at the Kyoto section, and there on page 408, listed under “Information”, I found Deep Kyoto! This edition came out in February, but I had absolutely no idea…

So that was nice.

Incidentally, the other sites listed are Kyoto City’s Official Travel Guide (those groovers have been doing a lot of tweeting recently), Kyoto Kyoto .JP (they have a very handy coupon map),  Eat Drink Kyoto (an excellent source for the bon vivant), and Art See Kyoto (which I assume is the pet project of a friend of one of the Rough Guide authors as there is NOTHING on the site yet). Can’t really endorse the Rough Guide as I have never used it (and I’m honest like that), but it is of course the Lonely Planet‘s BIG RIVAL so there must be something to it.

Also in the Yodobashi Camera bookshop they have a big fat one volume hardback edition of Haruki Murakami’s 1Q84 Books 1-3. The weight of the thing appalled me. Why, I wondered, can’t they publish each book separately? I am curious enough to want to read it, but who wants to carry that monster around? Well… apparently it’s rubbish anyway.
