Chikyuya serves cheap and cheerful izakaya style booze and nosh a short walk to the south of the Kawaramachi/Shijo intersection.
The atmosphere is super casual here; everyone crowds in together and the evidence of many a good night is left pinned to the walls in the form of photos, business cards and obscure notes. Chikyuya has always been popular with students in particular, because everything is so cheap.
On the menu are things like yaki-tori (grilled chicken), age cheese (fried cheese sticks), kan-yako (tofu and kimchee), nankotsu kara-age (deep fried chicken cartilage), sara udon (a huge steaming bowl of noodles and veggies with fish flakes on top) and the legendary Chikyuya salad (which is just massive).

This is only a small selection from the many dishes on offer. And you will notice there are a lot of iddy-biddy things because izakaya dining is most fun when you go with a big bunch of people and order lots of small dishes and share.

The easiest way to get to Chikyuya is to go south from Shijo on Kawaramachi for about three blocks. When you see a car park on your left, turn left and it’s on your left again.
